A combination of natural and artificial lighting helps bring balance into our homes, adding a warm glow to our dining room or a friendly, bright light next to our favorite reading chair. Sunlight, artificial light, and candlelight all provide different aspects of residential lighting. |

Artificial Lighting Types

General lighting, ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting, and mood lighting are categories of artificial lighting types. The rooms in our homes often serve more than one purpose and lighting requirements vary accordingly. Often a combination of two types of lighting is best. Ask yourself what activities will occur in each room of your home, then sketch out a plan that provides the light required. General or Background Lighting
General or background lighting comes from indirect sources such as fluorescent ceiling lights or well-placed downlights. General lighting in homes includes ceiling fixtures in kitchens, family rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms. The purpose of general lighting is to cast bright, even light over a broad area, creating a feeling of well-being. General lighting may also cast distracting shadows on work areas such as kitchen countertops or writing desks unless supplemented by task lighting.

Task Lighting

Task lighting directs a pool of light for activities such as reading, cooking, and personal grooming. Task light is often provided by table and floor lamps and also by track lighting and spot lights.
